How to Prepare Your Home for a Lifestyle Newborn Session
One of my favourite things about lifestyle newborn sessions is that they take place in the comfort of your own home. There is something incredibly special about documenting those early days right where your family is settling into this new chapter together. Best part? You don’t have to pack up the family and hit the road.
The good news is that your home does not need to be perfectly styled or spotless for beautiful photos. In fact, the opposite is often true. These sessions are meant to feel real and relaxed. The last thing I want is you stressing before hand.
Here are a few simple ways you can prepare your space before I arrive.
Tidy, But Don’t Stress
Please don’t feel like you need to deep clean your entire house. I promise I am not looking in your cupboards.
Usually we will photograph in just two or three spaces such as the nursery, the master bedroom, or the living room. Wherever the light is best, is where I want to be. If you have time, simply clear nightstands, remove clutter from dressers, and tidy the floor in those areas. A quick sweep of the spaces with the best light is more than enough.
Let the Light In
Natural light is everything during a lifestyle newborn session.
When I arrive, I will likely open curtains or blinds to bring in as much light as possible. If your home has a room with large windows, that is often where we will spend the most time.
Keep Things Neutral
If there are any bright or distracting items around the bed, couch, or nursery (water bottles, phones, diaper boxes, etc.), it helps to move them out of the space beforehand. Simple, calm spaces photograph beautifully and keep the focus where it belongs — on your family.
Dress Comfortably
For parents, soft neutral clothing works best. Think cozy sweaters, linen, cotton, or simple textures. Avoid busy patterns or large logos.
For baby, a simple onesie, swaddle, or soft sleeper is perfect. Often babies end up wrapped in a blanket or snuggled with mom or dad anyway. If you would like baby swaddled, then we will start swaddled and end in a sleeper/outfit.
Feed and Change Baby Before I Arrive
If possible, try to feed and change your baby shortly before I arrive. A full tummy and a fresh diaper usually helps baby feel calm and sleepy, which makes the beginning of the session nice and relaxed.
Follow Baby’s Lead
Newborn sessions are always baby-led. There is no pressure if your little one needs to feed, be changed, or take a break. Those quiet moments often end up being some of the most meaningful images.
The goal of these sessions is simply to document the connection between you and your baby in the place where your story is beginning.
Remember What Matters
Your home doesn’t need to look like a magazine.
The beauty of these sessions comes from the real moments, the way you hold your baby, the quiet between moments, and the feeling of being together in your own space.
Years from now, these photographs will remind you not only of how tiny your baby was, but also of what life looked like in those early days.
And that is the part that truly matters.
