2013 has definitely been a year for the books – might be my favorite one yet! I never thought in a million years I would wake up in Vietnam treating hundreds of children with free dental work, or that I would be emailing REAL LIFE clients back who actually want ME to take their pictures or that I would randomly quite my job of 2 years to pursuit my own happiness or that I would test drive a JEEP on a Thursday and pick it up on a Saturday! Some people tell me I am a in the moment person. That if I want something right in that very moment, that I will pursuit it. I guess it’s kind of true and its not always a great thing. I enjoy living on the edge, I enjoy a good adventure and I especially want this life to be memorable. I want to be remembered for being that spontaneous girl who travelled the world, who pursued her dreams and who had a bucket list of things she wanted to accomplish.
May of 2012 I went on the internet one night and decided that I wanted to travel, I texted my best friend Kristina at 12:30am and said “Hey, lets go to Africa to do volunteer dental work”. The next morning we were submitting our application forms and would find out in little over a month if we were going. Turns out Africa was booked up for 3 years, so we than submitted our forms for Vietnam. A month later we were accepted, we were booking flights to a foreign country, collecting dental supplies and travelling all the way across the world to meet up with 14 complete strangers. Scary eh? Actually not really, now that I think of it I don’t know how we did it. Getting lost in the Toyko airport, running on days of no sleep, eating snake head soup, seeing children who have never had a tooth brush or that have never drank water, staying in grundy hotels, mixing melatonin with malaria (DONT DO IT) and almost getting stuck in China because my best friend forgot a completely un-relevant piece of paper. The list goes on, the memories are there forever & I have an album of over 3,000 pictures to show for it! Just goes to show how last minute decisions can be some of the best decisions of your life – go out on a limb once in a while and do something completely crazy, I promise you it will be worth it!
April of 2013, I decided I wanted to take photography classes and have photography as a hobby. That weekend I went out and bought a camera and signed up for my photography certificate at SAIT. Next thing I know, I have friends and family asking to take their photos, make a Facebook business page, now I am writing on a REAL LIFE blog on my own website and responding to REAL LIFE clients of mine! Thank you to everyone who pushed me to pursuit my photography dreams, this is more than I ever hopped for in a million years and it is absolutely incredible. Photography is what I love doing and what I live to do. A camera is apart of my everyday, whether it is taking pictures of clients, using my iPhone to document day to day life, uploading photos on Facebook – it is there everywhere I go. I love it, it is what I am a passionate about and something I will do for the rest of my life. Sometimes I drive my family and friends crazy because we can’t eat our meals till I get a good picture, or taking the same picture 5 times until I get the one I like or carrying my camera to ridiculous places because I don’t want to miss out on anything! That’s me, thats who I am and who I will always be. I live my life by the quote below.
I encourage everyone to make goals, lay out your dreams & make things to work towards. Sometimes just wing it, and see where it takes you. 2013 was a great year, but 2014 is going to be even better. This is the first time in the past 7 years that I do not have a flight booked somewhere. Who knows, maybe I will book a last minute flight and take another adventure. Decide who you want to be and be it. Be really good at it.
Wishing each and every one of you a very Happy New Year. May the next year ahead of you be filled with friends, family, laughter, love, experiences, memories & growth. Heres to the new year ahead of us, lets make 2014 the best one yet.
